and James R. Spangler |
 |
| A photographic essay of the history of the Detroit-Superior
(now VeteransMemorial) Bridge subway, When Cleveland Had a Subway
recalls the short era when streetcars traveled below ground. Between
1917 and 1954, the most bustling period in Cleveland's history,
the city did have a subway of sorts. The lower deck of the Detroit-Superior
Bridge witnessed the near constant squeal of streetcar wheels. The
lines that ran from Public Square westward at their height brought
thousands of West-siders and others to and from the center of the
city. The 48-page book contains 53 vintage photos of the bridge,
streetcars, interurbans, and the downtown area surrounding the subway.
Take a ride along memory lane with a story and images of Cleveland's
rich past. |
