| The sequel to Cleveland Landmarks Press' best-selling book of
2000, The Silver Grille: Memories and Recipes, by Richard E. Karberg, Judith
Karberg, and Jane Hazen is out in stores. The Higbee Company and The Silver
Grille: More Memories, More Recipes, the newest release follows up the original
book that sold over 12,000 copies and spent more than eight weeks as the
best-selling area book on the Plain Dealer's Best Sellers List.
While Karberg in his first book examined the Silver Grille's operations and
ambience, in The Higbee Company and The Silver Grille he takes readers on a
floor-by-floor tour of the famous Higbee Company department store at its apex -
in 1956. Higbee's then had just completed its first major store renovation, and
suburban shopping malls had yet to dominate the local retail scene. Readers can
relive and remember the meticulous displays, the upscale merchandise, and the
incredible amenities with 86 illustrations and old advertisements. And, the
book provides 34 more original Silver Grille recipes, dishes that made the
downtown restaurant the special dining experience that Greater Clevelanders
remember so fondly.
Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer's Foods and Restaurants Editor, adds to the new book
with an introduction as well.
